Fukuoka

Fukuoka (福岡) is the largest city in Kyushu and one of the ten most populated cities in Japan. Because of its proximity to the Asian mainland (closer to Seoul than Tokyo), Fukuoka has been a major port city for many centuries and was chosen by the Mongol invasion forces as its landing point in the thirteenth century.

Today's Fukuoka is the product of the merger of two cities in the year 1889 when the port city of Hakata and the old castle city of Fukuoka came together in a city called Fukuoka. Hakata continues to be the name of one of the central districts of Fukuoka and the main railway station.
